What
is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics
is the art and science of moving teeth and jaws to obtain the most ideal
functional health of the individual. This branch of dentistry, which
requires two to three full years of additional graduate study, plays
an important part in achieving overall oral health. The orthodontist
specializes in diagnosis, prevention and, when necessary, treatment
of dental and facial irregularities.
These
dental problems may be inherited or may be acquired. Inherited conditions
include crowded teeth, excessive spacing of the teeth, extra or missing
teeth and other less common irregularities. Those conditions that one
may acquire can be cause by finger or thumb sucking, tongue thrusting,
enlarged tonsils and adenoids or the accidental loss of teeth.
This
abundance of potential problems can only be properly treated by an orthodontic
professional. Early detection and treatment to correct these problems
will be less costly than surgical dental care that may eventually become
necessary. The orthodontist's job is to visualize the end result of
treatment and to direct efforts toward obtaining that result in a timely
manner.
There
is no specific guideline as to when one should see an orthodontist for
the first time. The recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontics
is that every child should see an orthodontist by age seven or earlier
if a problem is detected. However, orthodontic treatment is effective
at any age. We have successfully treated many children as young as 2
years of age. Adult treatment comprises about 25% of orthodontic patients
nationwide. The percentage of adult patients treated in our office is
closer to 40%.
The
cooperation of staff and patient is very important to the success of
our efforts. We promise professional, effective treatment while keeping
you informed as an active participant in the process.
